It is about the same height, a little narrower in width but greater depth - in that the other bag we did was like 2" wide or so on the sides. This tote is closer to like 4-5".

Hi Trish! Just curious... how big is the Tie Front Tote Bag? Bigger or smaller than the patchwork tote? It is pretty cute! I may have something else that night but I'm going to try to get it changed...

Hi Maureen :>)

To answer your question, once in awhile I'll make a duplicate only because I have a friend or a customer who has seen a bag somewhere and loved it and wants the same one. But I much prefer to just design on the fly - pick something from my stash and then build from there. I do make the same style bag many times over but almost always with different spins to it, embellishments, etc.

Were you cutting all of those to make and sell I assume? One thing you might try instead is to sell them as a kit. Perhaps you could unload half your stash in that manner and provide instructions for the construction of the bag if it is an original pattern. If it isn't, you might be able to purchase the patterns wholesale as a shop owner and then sell the pattern retail along with the kit. Just a thought...

One of the reasons I got away from doing the trunk shows offering custom order bags was because I was so busy sewing all of the time and sewing orders specific to other peoples desires that it did take some of the fun out of it and was not as enjoyable.

If you're feeling buried under your 50 cut projects - I would figure out a way to unload them and then start again building a project that you do enjoy. Turning it into a "factory" may work for some but you typically aren't making enough money on any given item to really make it worth it if you aren't enjoying it. Does that make sense?

As a shop keeper, you have to factor in the cost of your materials including thread, your electric, your internet usage, etc for every item along with your labor to determine what is the real cost of creating your item. Sometimes, when you really analyze it - you end up not being compensated fairly for what you are doing...which may be ok so long as you enjoy the work and it's a hobby and not a means of income. But if it's just a chore - then you're really losing in every aspect.

Hope you can figure out a way to find the joy in sewing again...

Best,
Trish

Hi Trish
My second comment/question in an hour. Won't make an habit of it. I love your bags and wonder if you make multiples or just one-of-a-kind? The reason I ask is that my creative urges are seriously ill and I think it may be that I cut out over 50 bags of the same style. They are all packed away now as after cutting all the pieces out with my great scissors I'm sick of them. So I have 50 packets to make bags, but no 'go'. The reason for the question about multiples. Do you think I may have squashed my desire to create by turning the bag 'fun'' into a factory that makes identical (though diff fabrics) items? I'm feeling really down about this and it affects all my sewing to think I have ALL THOSE BAGS stored in storage boxes in pieces;-) Great ideas......
Thanks,
Maureen Martinek

Yes our team is going national. McK is excited b/c she will get to the AG store again! Count me in for May 14 and June 11. I will send your email around and hopefully get one of my friends to join me. I also have an extra sewing machine if someone needs it!
